How to BUY Photographs and Digital Images
(see below to obtain photo rights for publication or commercial purposes)
There are two ways to buy photos and images
EITHER
(1) Ordering online by secure credit card transaction.
This is very easy! You simply select the product(s) you require by ticking the appropriate box beside the product you wish to buy. (see 1)
In the right-hand column you choose the quantity required (default setting is 1). If you require DIGITAL IMAGES FOR PRIVATE USE, (go to 2) check to see if the words Instant Download appear alongside (at 3). If so, you will be receive your image instantly when you pay. Otherwise it will be sent to you separately as an email attachment.
You will then be taken forward to checkout
OR
(2) Listing your requirements on one of our order forms, and sending it with a cheque or postal order.
Click here to download Order Form and enclose it, with your cheque to cover payment.
Orders by post will naturally take a little longer to process than those made online by credit card.
Cheques should be made payable to SOUTHERN IMAGES.

A charge of £3.95 will be made for administration, handling, posting and packing and this will be added to all orders made online for UK destinations, including the supply of digital images by e-mail. However, if you order INSTANT DOWNLOADS only, with no other products, there is no handling charge. Also, they are supplied instantly to you upon completion of payment, so you don't have to wait for the post to obtain what you want!
Orders in excess of £20 incur a lower handling charge of £2.95, and all orders in excess of £30 are handled and posted free of charge to UK destinations.
Different handling and posting charges apply to orders from non-UK countries, and these can be ascertained when using the shopping cart.
Please note that there is a minimum order value of £4 (excluding handling, postage and packing) and the minimum order for slides is 5 slides.
Searching for Photographs
We have tried to make it as easy as possible to search for the photographs you require.
There are two main ways of finding a particular photo.
(1) Using the COLLECTIONS button/link you will find a list of the collections into which our photos are grouped. Click on any of these and you will find a range of categories, which with a further click will lead you to the subject area of your choice. As you can see there are numerous categories to browse.
(2) Use the KEYWORD SEARCH box which is at the top right of every page on the website. Here you can enter any single search term (e.g. buses), a specific item for your search, such as a place name (e.g Guildford) or a particular subject (e.g. 35028).
You can enter absolutely any single term (even a single digit or letter) and our extremely powerful search engine will track it down if it appears in the descriptions or keyword lists of any photo on the site!
All matching photos will then be displayed on screen as thumbnails.
However, please note KEYWORD SEARCH only works with a single letter or number or word!!
If you wish to enter two or more words or terms, or a phrase, you must use ADVANCED SEARCH.This is far more selective and enables you to look for phrases and carry out searches using multiple terms (e.g. Southern and steam and tank and loco.)
Using Keywords
We have embedded numerous keywords into all the photo collections to respond to more selective searches. These keywords can be seen when you view the large version of any photo: you can then click on any of the keywords and all other photos with the same keyword will be displayed for you.
Your Lightbox
The Lightbox is YOUR temporary collection of photos to help you to choose and compare. You may add up to 30 images to your lightbox.
If you wish to buy or order a photo that is in your lightbox, click on the thumbnail to view the enlarged image. Select the items that you want to purchase and click on the "add to cart" button, as explained above.
Your Shopping Cart
The shopping cart displays your order details, if you wish to delete an image from your order before proceeding to checkout, simply click on the remove link on the right side.
Checking out
You will need to login to checkout your order. If you are new to the site click the "new user" link and create a login name and password. This information is stored so that you can return to the site and so that we can review your order.
We utilize the PayPal payment gateway for purchases made on this site. To pay using PayPal simply complete the form and enter your credit card details, no membership account of PayPal is required.
If you do not want to use our online ordering system, you can of course order by post as described above.
Orders will naturally take a little longer to process than those made online by credit card.
We believe that our service is very fast and we aim to dispatch photographs within 5 working days of receiving your order. That means an order received on a Sunday, will be leave us (by 1st Class Post) withing 5 working days (Monday being the first day, therefore FRIDAY WILL BE DAY FIVE)
Digital images by email attachment are normally sent within 24 hours, or by email or a CD, as preferred, in the case of 3000 pixel wide images for reproduction purposes.
Large photographs (over 12" x 8") may take a few days longer.
If you have not received your order within these time scales, please email us so that we can investigate the situation.

Use of photos for reproduction or commercial purposes
We welcome the use of our photos in a wide range of media. Photos in our collection have been used in British national and provincial newspapers, national and special interest magazines, books, record covers and other media.
All our photos are rights-managed, NOT stock photos (i.e. a fee is payable for each and every usage).
You can select photos for reproduction/commercial purposes in TWO ways
EITHER
(1) For Limited Repro Rights (LRR) only you can pay in advance ONLINE using a credit card or BY POST using one of our downloadable order forms. You will then receive a high-quality jpg image by email or on a CD by post as you prefer. This will be about 3Mb in size and will produce (typically) a top quality printed image at least 10 inch wide at 300 dpi. This produces excellent results when published (e.g. click here to see one of our images as published in RAILWAY MAGAZINE March 2006 edition)
Please note that as the fee we charge for this service is very low, there are restrictions on permitted uses.(See the box below) If your intended use is not covered among those listed, you will need to obtain a quotation first as described next
OR
(2) For any purpose not covered by LRR you must obtain a quotation. The fee will depend on the type of publication, size of reproduced image, circulation, geographical area and so on.
Obtaining a quote is VERY simple: just click on the REQUEST REPRODUCTION RIGHTS link which is to the right of every large photo on the website and you will open up a quotation form which you can send us without any obligation. Again, note that our fees are very competitive compared to other picture libraries.

Limited Repro Rights (LRR) - Qualifying Uses
- Any use inside a low-volume book (i.e. less than 4,000 copies printed)
- Any use inside a low-circulation newspaper or magazine (with a certified circulation below 10,000 copies)
- Any use on a non-profit making or non-commercial website (e.g. schools, universities, churches)
All planned uses outside of those listed above are welcomed, but please obtain a quotation first by completing one of our REQUEST REPRODUCTION RIGHTS forms which are available beside each image when displayed full size on the website. We will give you a rapid reply indicating the fee payable. Our rates are very competitive.
Charities will receive very special consideration.
REMEMBER Any image used must not be altered in any way, other than minor cropping and MUST be credited EXACTLY AS SHOWN BELOW :

- A copy of any publication in which our images are used must be supplied at the time of publication : a photocopy of the relevant pages may be acceptable by prior agreement. Please contact us to check first.

ALL OTHER REPRODUCTIONS OF OUR IMAGES -EDITORIAL OR COMMERCIAL
You are permitted to use the image for one single purpose AS AGREED AT THE TIME OF QUOTATION.
You are buying a ONE TIME USE license to reproduce the image in one way only-you are NOT buying the copyright of the image which remains at all times with SOUTHERN-Images.
This means that you can use the image for one type of publication. If you use the image in a brochure, you do not have the right to then create a new product such as a magazine advertisement which uses the same image.
Images supplied for editorial or commercial purposes by email or on CD must be destroyed after use, and not stored permanently on computer or other electronic storage medium. Images must not be modified or resold or passed on to any third party.
Our images must not be used in any way or within any format which is illegal, offensive, racist, pornographic or otherwise likely to damage the good reputation of SOUTHERN-Images and its customers and suppliers.
Every image must be credited clearly in this way:

You will be asked to confirm your agreement to these conditions before your order is processed.
We request a copy of any publication in which our images are used- a photocopy of the relevant pages may be acceptable by prior agreement. Please contact us to check first.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Permitted Usage of Photos bought from this site
Photos purchased whether as prints or in digital form are for private use only, unless otherwise agreed.
Any other use of these photos in any published form (print or digital) IS NOT PERMITTED and is a breach of our copyright.
You will be prompted to confirm your agreement to our conditions before completing your order.
Digital images or photos may be used on private websites, subject to these conditions:

They can be used on one domain only (ie; www.yourdomainname.com))

They can be used on as many web pages within that domain as you desire.

They can be cropped if necessary, but they can not be included in any composite that is resold

They CANNOT be resold or offered to others for use on other websites or other publications

Product Return Policy
Photographs supplied will be replaced if defective Return shipping charges are your responsibility. You must contact us prior to any return and we will give you specific return instructions. If your order is delivered damaged, it is your responsibility to contact the shipper. For obvious reasons, digital images will not be subject to any refund if they are not acceptable to you: please study the on-screen image carefully before ordering to ensure that it meets your requirements. IMPORTANT: Save all packing materials. Failure to do so can cause the shipper to deny your claim.
